Sarah Johnson

Sarah Johnson spent most of her life living in the Adirondacks where she had the opportunity to enjoy the outdoor adventures of the mountains. Hiking the trails, canoeing and waterskiing on their lakes, as well as snow skiing down their mountains, from an early age, Sarah developed an appreciation for the outdoors. An appreciation for team sports developed as Sarah played on the basketball, volleyball, and softball teams during her middle and high school career.

In Johnstown, NY, Sarah danced with Studio Dance Contempra. While dancing there, Sarah had her first opportunity to teach a dance class for boys. It was then that she decided that she wanted to teach dance to children of all ages as well as choreograph.

While attending Finger Lakes Community College, in order to earn an Associates in Humanities, Sarah taught jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, and creative movement at Studio for the Performing Arts in Newark, N.Y. Upon earning her Associates, Sarah earned both Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Dance Education pre K- 12. As well as pursue a degree in Dance Education, Sarah also performed with the Kista Tucker Dance Company as well as performed and choreographed for student concerts and graduate thesis performances. It was then Sarah received the Friars Foundation Award for Dedication and Excellence in the arts. During her studies at Brockport, Sarah’s appreciation for movement evolved as was exposed to and influenced by the art form of Capoeira.

Sarah student taught at School of the Arts where she taught 6-8th grade dance, 11th grade ballet, 12th grade jazz, and Senior Dance History. During that time, Sarah performed with In the Company of Women a collective of female dancers from the Rochester area and Gus Giordano’s National Jazz Conference in Buffalo.

Sarah has been a part of the GCCS team since 2003. Her professional development experiences like Responsive Classroom for PE, EL Summer Institutes, annual Orff Conferences and EL National conferences help to shape her teaching practice. Also, Sarah currently takes dance class at Garth Fagan Dance and performs with Akoma Ntoaso Dance Ensemble based in Rochester.
