Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)

Developing the whole child and empowering our students as agents of social change.

Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)

What is Social & Emotional Learning?

Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) is a framework designed by Casel that helps schools foster a trusting and inclusive community. By promoting self-awareness, healthy communication, and peaceful conflict resolution, our students learn to collaborate with peers of different cultures and backgrounds.

Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework

Developed by the New York State Education Department, the Culturally Responsive-Sustaining (CR-S) Education Framework is embedded across all aspects of the GCCS curriculum. We aim to:

  • Create a student-centered learning environment that affirms racial and cultural identities
  • Identify inequities and biases and develop our students’ abilities to connect across lines of difference
  • Elevate historically marginalized voices
  • Empower our students as agents of social change

Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)

Our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework uses multiple points of data to provide each student with support that is both proactive and responsive to their needs. Our educators identify the needs of every student, plan for the specific supports that are required, and collect and collaboratively analyze data to ensure the plan is meeting the needs of the student(s). Plans for support focus on a student’s academic needs, social-emotional needs, school absenteeism, or a combination of these areas.

Intervention Services

GCCS employs Academic Intervention Teachers to provide additional support to students in need.
