Answers to Questions View answers to Frequently Asked Questions below to learn more about Genesee Community Charter School and its programs. FAQs Home > About Us > FAQs What are the school hours? The school day is from 7:45 a.m. – 2:45 p.m. Monday through Friday except Fridays which always have an early dismissal at 12:45 p.m. Are there extracurricular activities or before/after care programs? GCCS does not have consistent extracurricular activities beyond the regular school day, although some pilot programs are being implemented for Friday afternoons at both campuses. When families are looking for additional programing or after care, the school provides recommendations of local agencies to support this need. Does GCCS and GCCS - Flour City provide transportation? Transportation is provided by the student’s home district as long as the student lives more than a mile and a half away from school. Does GCCS and GCCS - Flour City provide special education services? If a child qualifies for or has an existing Individualized Education Plan (IEP), the student’s home district will provide the child with services based on the IEP. GCCS has a Special Education Coordinator and Social Worker to support the coordination of services. How does the lottery work? Since charter schools are tuition free, it is important that all residents have an opportunity to attend GCCS. Therefore, a public lottery is held in April where RCSD residents will be chosen first, then suburban residents. By state law, siblings of existing GCCS students will have preference first. Staff children also have preference. Separate lotteries are held for each school and perspective and enrolled students are not transferrable between the two schools. Waitlists remain for the entire academic year. For more information, see the Admissions Page. When can I apply for my child? If your child will be 5 years old by December 1st, then you can apply as long as incoming grade levels match available grades at GCCS at RMSC and/or GCCS – Flour City. You must re-apply each year to enter the lottery. Paper applications are available at each school. However, the easiest way to apply is online through www.GoodSchoolsROC.org Do you celebrate holidays? To respect our diverse population, we do not celebrate specific holidays at GCCS except birthdays. This allows for uninterrupted instruction and does not place particular beliefs or practices above others. However, family traditions and holidays are often recognized during classroom shares and Community Circles.
