Approved New Charter!

In an effort to increase opportunities to educate our community’s children through an integrated and innovative model, Genesee Community Charter School (GCCS) is excited to announce the opening of a new school, Genesee Community Charter School – Flour City Campus!

The proposal was provided to SUNY, one of the State’s charter authorizers in February 16, 2021.  The charter was officially approved by SUNY and Board of Regents  in the fall of 2021 and it opened its doors to students on September 19, 2022.

The Reason for Replication

Since its founding in 2001, Genesee Community Charter School has been one of the most successful K–6 schools in New York as measured by the New York State Education Department’s School Performance Index. GCCS is nationally recognized for its implementation of the EL Education  (formerly named Expeditionary Learning) model. Throughout its 20-year history, GCCS has expanded its footprint through efforts to collaborate and grow professionally with local and national schools as well as community service projects with community-based organizations and looks forward to continued partnerships and growth. GCCS equally values multidisciplinary education, community activism, and social justice and actively seeks ways to erase the visible and invisible boundaries to equity in education.

“In this past year, our country has seen the greatest challenges in the fight for racial, economic, and educational equity and has truly been divided across all differences. The time for action is now,” said School Leader, Shannon Hillman. “Our small school community of 220 students has consistently outperformed schools in the city, county, and the state to help grow Rochester’s youngest citizens. By opening a second school, we can expand our reach to serve more students and families.”

The Plan for Our Flour City Campus

The replica school, GCCS – Flour City Campus, will serve approximately 210 students and have a local history-focused curriculum with a strong arts-integration focus.

The campus found its inaugural home in the former Colgate Divinity Campus during the summer of 2022.  Renovations were needed to be awarded a Certificate of Occupancy before school could open its doors.  GCCS – Flour City Campus has signed a 5 year lease agreement assuming the facility will accommodate its growth.

With the location 5 minutes from the original campus, both schools will strengthen their partnership and collaboration with each other as well as other community partners such as the Rochester Museum & Science Center.

Parent Information Sessions

Six optional Information Sessions were offered in March to help families be as informed as possible about our schools.  If you would like more information about our new school, please contact Maureen Milke or Shannon Hillman at 585-417-7020 with any questions or concerns.

Applications

You can still apply!  Applications for the 2023-24 school year will be available online at GoodSchoolsRoc.org beginning in December, 2022. Families of prospective students must have submitted an online application by April, 2023 to be entered in the lottery.

Admission to GCCS is not restricted based on a student’s intellectual ability, disability, race, ethnic background, or religion.  However, preference among applicants is given to siblings of GCCS – Flour City students and, if open spaces remain, to children of GCCS – Flour City staff members and, if spaces remain, to applicants who are residents of the Rochester City School District.  Suburban students are welcome to apply, but are enrolled after all RCSD applicants.

All applicants who are not admitted to the school are entered onto our waiting list in the order in which their applications are drawn in the lottery.  Because of our school’s strong reputation, we always have a long waiting list.  For the best chance of enrollment, please submit your online application by April, 1st.  Throughout the school year, we fill any openings from the waiting list.  A new application must be made each year; applications do not roll over from year to year.
